Abbey Art Works presents Summer 2017 Workshops

Abbey Art Works, located on the beautiful grounds of Saint Joseph Abbey, presents a series of workshops and classes this summer. Discounts are available for most Guild of St. Luke members, a newly launched yearly membership program at Abbey Art Works. The Guild of St. Luke is open to all, including arts organizations, professional artists, teachers, working artists, patrons, collectors, scholars, historians and philosophers. The following courses are currently scheduled at Abbey Art Works, located at 75376 River Road in Covington, La.:

Painting with Acrylics, $350. Instructor Billie Bourgeois will lead this intuitive and spontaneous drawing and painting class. Working with a variety of mediums, artists will enjoy the “dance” of mark making, observing, and responding until they complete images that feel whole and complete. “Painting with Acrylics” takes place every Monday during July, beginning Monday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. To register, visit www.billiebourgeois.com.

The Shocking Truth About Color, $210. Lyn Taylor, instructor and Abbey Art Works artist-in-residence, will lead artists in useful exercises that will explore the Abbey Art Works Study Palette, the concept of “color space” and the excitement of mixing color. This workshop takes place during four consecutive Saturdays in July: July 1, 8, 15, and 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit www.paintpalletteandbrush.com for registration and details.

The Art of Illumination, $210. This workshop on manuscript illumination takes place during four Saturdays in August: August 5, 12, 19, and 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Manuscript illumination is the process in which text is accompanied by decorations and illustrations. Also led by instructor Lyn Taylor, she will lead participants through the process of manuscript painting and gold leaf on paper. Artists of all skill levels will learn how to produce their own symbolic life journey page.

Creative Landscape Painting & Mentoring Classes with Alan Flattmann, $360 or $180 per month. Join nationally renowned artist and teacher Alan Flattmann for these informative new classes that will help people hone their skills as an artist. Students may choose to work in pastel, oil or watercolor. Flattmann stresses the basic principles of composition, drawing, color and technique that apply to any style of representational painting. He will also show how to paint creatively from photos and directly from nature. These classes take place Wednesday evenings, 6-9 p.m., July 5 – August 23. Enrollment is limited.
